AIIMS Medical Entrance Exam

Medical

The AIIMS medical entrance examination was the separate test the All India Institute of Medical Sciences once held for admission to its MBBS course. AIIMS no longer conducts its own undergraduate entrance test, and admission to MBBS at AIIMS institutions is now made through NEET UG, the single national entrance test for undergraduate medical courses, followed by the centralised counselling conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee. Candidates are therefore students who have completed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology and who appear in NEET UG hoping to secure an MBBS seat at on

Overview expand_more
Because the separate AIIMS undergraduate test has been discontinued, the relevant examination is NEET UG, an objective test covering the Class 11 and Class 12 syllabus in Physics, Chemistry and Biology, conducted by the National Testing Agency in a single sitting on a common date across the country. Candidates receive a score and an all India rank, and those who meet the qualifying percentile enter counselling. AIIMS MBBS seats are filled through the online counselling rounds run by the Medical Counselling Committee, where candidates fill choices and are allotted seats by rank, category and the seat matrix released for the year. Seats exist at AIIMS New Delhi and at the other AIIMS institutions established across the states. The syllabus, paper pattern, qualifying percentile and counselling schedule for a year are published in the official NEET UG information bulletin and in the committee's notices.

Academics like Jodhpur, Bhubaneswar, and Bhopal that rank among the top AIIMS come next, requiring ~680–690+ marks for UR ranks below 700. At these institutes, OBC candidates also need very high marks (~650–710), whereas SC/ST cutoffs fall to a level of ~520–590 marks at recent additions like Bibinagar, Rajkot, or Gorakhpur, with ranks extending to 40,000+.

Top AIIMS continue to require extremely high NEET ranks. New campuses provide more feasible alternatives for students with reasonable ranks, particularly in reserved categories.

AIIMS MBBS 2025 Tie Breaking Criteria

NTA assigns every candidate a rank based on their NEET scores. When two or more candidates have the same scores, tie breaking criteria are applied.

If two candidates have the same score, their Biology scores are considered first. Higher marks in Biology mean a higher rank. If Biology marks are also the same, then Chemistry scores are considered.

If the tie still remains, the candidate with fewer wrong answers gets a higher rank. If that does not help, the older candidate receives the higher rank.

An example of the tie breaking criteria is shown below.

Name Biology Chemistry Physics Total NEET Rank
Rahul 355 170 160 685 1,252
Aisha 355 165 165 685 1,253

In this example, both candidates scored the same total in NEET. Rahul had higher marks in Chemistry, which is why he received a higher rank.
