What is TNEA Cutoff 2026?

The TNEA cutoff is the minimum score that determines your seat in a Tamil Nadu engineering college. It is not based on an entrance exam. Your score comes from your Class 12 marks in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.

The Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE), Tamil Nadu, manages the process through Anna University via tneaonline.org.

There are two types of cutoffs in TNEA. The qualifying cutoff is the minimum score to register for counselling. The admission cutoff — also called the closing mark — is the score of the last student allotted a seat in a specific college and branch. Your mark must match or exceed the closing mark to secure that seat.

Previous Year Official TNEA Cutoff

Source: tneaonline.org — Official TNEA Counselling Portal

The OC closing mark rose by 1 mark from 2021 to 2025. The SC closing mark at the same college rose by 7.50 marks over the same period. Reserved category competition is growing faster than open competition at CEG CSE.

Why Does the TNEA Cutoff Rise Every Year?

More students score very high marks in Class 12 each year. Seats at top colleges stay roughly the same in number.

So more students compete for fewer seats. This pushes closing marks up every year.

Is the TNEA Closing Mark the Same as the TNEA Cutoff?

Yes. The closing mark is the cutoff for that college and branch. It is the score of the last student allotted a seat there.

If your score is at or above it, you are eligible. If it is below, you are not.

Factors Affecting TNEA Cutoff 2026

TNEA closing marks change every year. Several factors push them up or pull them down. Here is what drives the cutoff:

  • Number of Class 12 students: More students taking the Tamil Nadu board exam means more competition. Higher participation lifts closing marks at top colleges.
  • Overall Class 12 performance: If students score higher marks statewide, all closing marks tend to rise. A strong board result directly pushes the cutoff up.
  • Total seats available: New colleges or increased seat capacity can lower the cutoff. Fewer seats at popular colleges raises it.
  • Branch popularity: CSE, IT, and AI & DS attract far more students than Civil or Chemical Engineering. High demand keeps their closing marks near the top.
  • College reputation and location: Government colleges in Chennai — CEG and MIT — draw the most competitive applicants. Private colleges in smaller cities have lower closing marks.
  • Reservation categories: OC closing marks are always the highest. SC, SCA, and ST categories have their own separate seats with lower closing marks. Your category determines which closing mark you compete against.
  • Random number tie-breaking: When two students have identical cutoff marks, a randomly assigned number decides the higher rank. This can affect who gets the last seat in a tightly contested branch.

TNEA 2026 Round 1 Closing Marks

How is TNEA Cutoff Calculated?

The TNEA cutoff does not depend on an entrance exam. It comes entirely from your Class 12 board marks in three subjects. The formula gives double weight to Mathematics.

The formula is: Cutoff Mark = Mathematics + (Physics / 2) + (Chemistry / 2)

The maximum possible score is 200 marks when you score 100 in all three subjects.

Subject Max Marks (Class 12) Contribution to Cutoff
Mathematics 100 Full marks (100 max)
Physics 100 Half marks (50 max)
Chemistry 100 Half marks (50 max)
Total Cutoff Mark — 200 max

If two students have the same cutoff mark, TNEA uses a random number tie-breaker. Each student receives a randomly assigned number at registration. The student with the better number gets the higher rank. This system is fully transparent and cannot be influenced.

TNEA Cutoff 2026: Marks vs Rank

Your TNEA rank is determined by your cutoff mark. The higher your mark, the better your rank.

What is the difference between qualifying cutoff and admission cutoff in TNEA?

The qualifying cutoff is the minimum mark needed to be considered for counselling. The admission cutoff is the actual closing mark at which seats are allotted in each round. The admission cutoff varies by college, branch, and category. The qualifying cutoff is the same for all candidates.

TNEA Qualifying Cutoff vs Admission Cutoff

The qualifying cutoff is the minimum mark needed to register for TNEA counselling. The admission cutoff, also called the closing mark, is the actual mark of the last student allotted a seat at a specific college and branch.

You may clear the qualifying cutoff but miss your preferred college if your mark falls below that college's closing mark.

Is the TNEA Cutoff Different for Male and Female Students?

The cutoff formula is the same for all students. Some colleges have seats reserved for women under Tamil Nadu government policy.

Those seats may show slightly different closing marks. The calculation method does not change based on gender.

Does TNEA Cutoff Apply to Private Deemed Universities?

No. TNEA counselling and cutoff apply only to government and government-aided engineering colleges affiliated to Anna University.

Private deemed universities like VIT, SRM, and Amrita run their own entrance exams. TNEA cutoff does not apply to them.

Good TNEA Cutoff for Government Engineering Colleges

A score of 190 or above gives you a good chance at government colleges for most branches in the OC category.

  • For CSE at Anna University campuses — CEG, MIT, and ACT — you need 198 or more.
  • For non-CSE branches at district government colleges, 185 to 192 is typically enough.

How the TNEA Merit List and Rank Work

All eligible students are ranked by cutoff mark from highest to lowest. The student with the highest mark gets Rank 1.

Ties are broken by a randomly assigned number. Seven separate rank lists are prepared — one for each category:

  • OC
  • BC
  • BCM
  • MBC & DNC
  • SC
  • SCA
  • ST

What to Do If You Miss the Round 1 Confirmation Deadline

If you miss the July 26, 2026 deadline, you lose your Round 1 seat. You are still eligible for Round 2.

Round 2 choice filling starts August 3, 2026. Log in to tneaonline.org and fill your choices within the Round 2 schedule.

Can Closing Marks Go Up in Round 2 Compared to Round 1?

Yes, this can happen at popular colleges. When a sought-after college still has seats in Round 2, more students compete for them.

This can push the Round 2 closing mark above Round 1 at that college. Less popular colleges often see lower closing marks in later rounds.

*The article might have information for the previous academic years, which will be updated soon subject to the notification issued by the University/College.

TNEA Cutoff: Direct Answers to Common Questions

Why does the TNEA cutoff rise every year?

More students score very high marks in Class 12 each year. Seats at top colleges stay roughly the same in number. So more students compete for fewer seats. This pushes closing marks up every year.

Is the TNEA closing mark the same as the TNEA cutoff?

Yes. The closing mark is the cutoff for that college and branch. It is the score of the last student allotted a seat there. If your score is at or above it, you are eligible. If it is below, you are not.

Which college has a lower cutoff but still offers good placements?

Colleges like Kongu Engineering College, Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, and National Engineering College have lower closing marks. They still maintain strong placement records. Choosing the right branch at these colleges often gives better outcomes than taking a weak branch at a higher-ranked college.

TNEA Result Previous Year Statistics

TNEA registrations have grown consistently over the past five years. They rose from about 1.61 lakh in 2021 to over 3 lakh in 2025, an increase of nearly 87% in four years.

The 2021 and 2022 rank lists were delayed because board exams were disrupted during the pandemic. From 2023, the process returned to its June–July timeline.

In 2025, over 2.39 lakh candidates were allotted ranks. This filled more than 4 in every 5 available engineering seats, the highest demand ratio in recent years.

TNEA 2026 Tie-Breaking Mechanism and Random Number

With over 3 lakh students competing and a maximum mark of 200, many candidates end up with identical normalised scores. When that happens, TNEA uses a strict six-step hierarchy to decide who ranks higher. The random number is the final backstop — only invoked when all five earlier criteria also produce a draw.

TNEA 2026 tie-breaking order — step by step:

Priority Criterion How It Resolves the Tie
1 Mathematics marks (percentage) Higher Maths score ranks higher
2 Physics marks (percentage) If Maths is equal, higher Physics score ranks higher
3 Optional / 4th elective subject marks If Maths and Physics are both equal, the optional subject decides
4 Overall Class 12 percentage (all subjects) If all three above are equal, overall HSC percentage is compared
5 Date of birth The older candidate (born on an earlier date) gets the higher rank
6 TNEA Random Number If all five above are identical, the student with the higher random number ranks better

What is the TNEA 2026 random number?

The TNEA random number is a 10-digit unique number generated by a computerised algorithm and assigned by DOTE to every registered candidate. The 2026 random numbers were released on June 10, 2026. A higher random number gives you the advantage over a student whose score, subject marks, overall percentage, and date of birth are all identical to yours.

This system keeps the process transparent and machine-driven. Because the random number is published before the rank list, every candidate can verify their own tie-breaking position. The number also appears on your downloaded rank card PDF.

How to check your TNEA 2026 random number:

  • Log in at tneaonline.org with your email ID and password.
  • Look for Random Number or Tie-Breaking Details on your candidate dashboard.
  • Your 10-digit number appears there along with how it applies if a tie occurs.
  • The number is also printed on your rank card PDF.

In practice, the random number matters for very few candidates — most ties are resolved at Step 1 (Maths marks) or Step 2 (Physics marks). Reaching Step 6 requires candidates with identical normalised scores, identical individual subject marks, identical overall HSC percentage, and the same birthdate — an extremely rare combination.

Ques. Does a higher TNEA random number guarantee a better rank?

Ans. Only if you are tied with another student on all five earlier criteria — Maths percentage, Physics percentage, optional subject marks, overall Class 12 percentage, and date of birth. For the vast majority of candidates, rank is determined well before the random number comes into play. Think of it as a last resort, not a primary driver of your position in the list.

TNEA 2026 Category-wise Rank Distribution

Tamil Nadu has one of the most detailed community reservation systems in India — 69% of TNEA government-quota seats are reserved for specific categories, with 31% open to all through the OC (Open Competition) pool. DOTE publishes 13 separate rank lists so every community category has its own ranked order. During counselling, seats are filled category-by-category; your community rank determines whether you qualify for a reserved seat in your category.

TNEA 2026 government-quota seat reservation by community:

TNEA 2026 Category-Wise Reservation

TNEA 2026 reserves seats for different categories under the government quota. The reservation percentages are fixed by the government.

Category Full Form Government Quota Reservation
OC Open Competition (General / Forward) 31%
BC Backward Class (Non-Muslim) 26.5%
MBC / DNC Most Backward Classes / Denotified Communities 20%
SC Scheduled Caste 15%
SCA Scheduled Caste — Arunthathiyar 3%
BCM Backward Class Muslim 3.5%
ST Scheduled Tribe 1%

Government School Quota (GSQ)

The Government School Quota is 7.5% carved from within each category above. It is not a separate block of seats.

This quota is taken proportionally from each community's existing share. For example, if BC holds 26.5% of seats, a sub-portion of those BC seats is reserved for BC students who studied Classes 6 to 12 exclusively in Tamil Nadu government or government-aided schools. Students who qualify for the GSQ compete in a less crowded sub-pool within their category. Counselling for this quota runs July 13–14, 2026, before the main rounds.

Estimated 2026 Applicant Share by Community

Applicant share estimates are based on 2025 TNEA registration patterns. Official 2026 category-wise totals will be updated once the rank list PDFs on tneaonline.org are fully analysed.

Category Estimated Applicant Share (2026) Government Seat Reservation
OC 22–24% 31%
BC 28–30% 26.5%
MBC / DNC 24–27% 20%
SC 16–18% 15%
SCA ~2% 3%
BCM 3–4% 3.5%
ST ~1% 1%

OC applicant share (22–24%) is lower than the OC seat reservation (31%). This means OC seats are somewhat less overcrowded relative to applicants compared to BC or MBC pools. Top colleges' OC seats for sought-after branches like CSE still see extreme competition. High scorers from all categories compete for OC seats. In 2025, 141 candidates posted a perfect 200, creating a dense cluster at the very top of the rank list.

BC and MBC students together represent over 50% of applicants but hold 46.5% of reserved seats. This makes competition within those categories tight. Closing marks for BC/MBC reserved seats at popular colleges often approach OC closing marks at the same institution.

TNEA 2026 Qualifying Marks and Eligibility

TNEA does not set a fixed minimum score for inclusion in the rank list in the traditional entrance-exam cutoff sense. Instead, it checks whether you meet a minimum PCM percentage before assigning a rank. Candidates who fall short are declared ineligible. In TNEA 2025, 8,657 candidates were found ineligible at this stage.

Category Minimum Aggregate Required in PCM (Physics + Chemistry + Maths)
OC (Open Competition / General) 50%
BC (Backward Class) 45%
BCM (Backward Class Muslim) 45%
MBC & DNC (Most Backward Classes) 40%
SC (Scheduled Caste) Pass marks only
SCA (Scheduled Caste — Arunthathiyar) Pass marks only
ST (Scheduled Tribe) Pass marks only

Other Eligibility Points

  • First-attempt marks only: TNEA uses only your first-attempt Class 12 board marks. Improvement exam, supplementary exam, or re-attempt marks are not considered in the rank calculation, regardless of which board you studied under.
  • Tamil Nadu nativity: You must be a Tamil Nadu native or have studied Classes 8 to 12 in Tamil Nadu schools. The nativity criteria have sub-categories with different proof requirements. Check tneaonline.org for the full details.
  • Board eligibility: Students from CBSE, ICSE, and other recognised national boards are fully eligible. Their PCM marks go through the same normalisation as State Board marks before ranks are assigned.
  • Age: No upper age limit for B.E./B.Tech/B.Arch/B.Planning. Marine Engineering programs specify a maximum age of 25 and carry additional eligibility requirements.

TNEA 2026 Counselling Closing Marks

Counselling closing marks are the effective cutoff in TNEA. They are the academic marks of the last student allotted a seat in each college-branch during a counselling round.

Round 1 choice filling opens July 20, 2026. Official 2026 closing marks will be available only after the Round 1 allotment, expected July 24, 2026. They will be published round by round on the official cutoff portal at cutoff.tneaonline.org.

Based on historical trends, top Anna University constituent colleges for CSE in the OC category consistently see closing marks between 197 and 200 out of 200. Government engineering colleges in other cities and popular private colleges see closings broadly in the 160–193 range, depending on branch and demand.

What After TNEA Result 2026?

The rank list is your entry ticket. Counselling is where you convert it into a college seat. TNEA 2026 uses an online counselling process with multiple rounds running from mid-July through September.

Stage 1 — Special Category and Government School Quota Counselling (July 13–18, 2026)

If you studied Classes 6 to 12 exclusively in Tamil Nadu government or government-aided schools, your GSQ counselling slot runs July 13–14. Other special reservation categories run July 15–18.

Missing these dates means losing the special-category benefit. You would then compete only in the general rounds from July 20.

Stage 2 — Round 1 Choice Filling (July 20–22, 2026)

Only candidates ranked 1 to 37,976 participate in Round 1. You can fill up to 100 college-branch preferences in priority order.

The order matters enormously. Anna University's algorithm allots you the highest-preference option for which your rank qualifies. Build this list carefully before the portal opens. Once you lock and submit, choices cannot be changed within Round 1.

Stage 3 — Round 1 Tentative Allotment (July 24, 2026)

You see your provisional seat. You then have three choices: accept and stop here, choose the upgrade option, or withdraw entirely.

The upgrade option keeps the Round 1 seat while trying for something better in Round 2. Withdrawing is risky — your Round 1 seat is released, and you compete fresh in Round 2 with no guarantee of any seat.

Stage 4 — Round 2 and Round 3 (Late July–August 2026)

Vacated and newly released seats go back into the pool. If you chose upgrade in Round 1, you participate again.

If Round 2 gives you a better seat, your Round 1 seat is automatically released. The process repeats for Round 3.

Stage 5 — Reporting to College

Once your allotment is final, report to the allotted college within the deadline DoTE sets. Bring originals and copies of all required documents.

Failure to report on time means your seat is cancelled and released to the pool.

Documents to Keep Ready for TNEA 2026 Counselling and College Reporting

Document Purpose
Class 12 (HSC) mark sheet — original + copies Academic mark and eligibility verification
Class 12 passing certificate Confirms board pass status
Class 10 mark sheet / certificate Date of birth and basic school proof
Transfer Certificate (TC) from school Student nativity and school category details
Community certificate (if applicable) Proof of reserved category eligibility
Nativity certificate (if required) Tamil Nadu domicile verification
Government School Study Certificate (for GSQ claimants) Proof of Classes 6–12 in Tamil Nadu government school
TNEA 2026 rank card (printout) Admission reference at Facilitation Centre and college
Income certificate (if applicable) For fee concession and scholarship applications
Passport-size photographs (recent) College records and ID cards

Always carry both originals and photocopies. Tamil Nadu government-quota admissions are strict — a missing original at the reporting stage can cost you the seat even after allotment. Verify the full checklist on tneaonline.org before your reporting date.

FAQs

Can I change my choices after locking them in TNEA 2026 Round 1?

No. Once you lock and submit choices for a round, they cannot be changed within that round. You can revise choices when Round 2 opens — but only if you selected the upgrade option at the Round 1 allotment stage. If you accepted Round 1 as final, you do not participate in further rounds.

What happens if I do not accept my Round 1 seat in TNEA 2026?

You have two options: upgrade or withdraw. Choosing upgrade holds your Round 1 seat while you try for something better in Round 2 — the safer route. Choosing to withdraw entirely releases your Round 1 seat back to the pool, and you must compete fresh in Round 2 with no guarantee of getting any seat. Upgrading is almost always the wiser choice unless you plan to exit the process.

When was the TNEA 2026 rank list released?

The source does not specify the exact release date of the TNEA 2026 rank list.

TNEA 2026 Rank List Release Date

The TNEA 2026 rank list was released on July 1, 2026 at tneaonline.org. The release was originally planned for June 29 but was moved to July 1 because CBSE candidates' revaluation marks arrived late.

Candidates can check their rank through their candidate login. The category-wise PDF is also available for download on the same portal.

TNEA 2026 Rank Calculation Formula

Your TNEA score = Mathematics marks (full) + Physics marks (÷ 2) + Chemistry marks (÷ 2), for a maximum of 200. Mathematics carries 50% of the weightage; Physics and Chemistry together carry the other 50%.

Anna University normalises these marks across all boards — TN State Board, CBSE, ICSE, and others — before computing your final score and rank.

TNEA 2026 Tie-Breaking Rule

Ties are broken in this order:

  1. Higher Mathematics percentage
  2. Higher Physics percentage
  3. Higher optional/elective subject percentage
  4. Higher overall Class 12 percentage
  5. Older date of birth
  6. Higher TNEA random number assigned by DOTE

Only if all six criteria are equal does a tie remain — virtually impossible in practice.

TNEA Random Number and Its Effect on Rank

The TNEA random number is a 10-digit number assigned by DOTE to every registered candidate as the last-resort tiebreaker. It was released on June 10, 2026 and appears on your rank card.

It only affects rank if you and another candidate have identical normalised scores, identical individual subject marks, identical overall HSC percentage, and the same date of birth. For most candidates, rank is decided long before the random number matters.

Minimum Percentage Required for TNEA Rank

You need a minimum PCM aggregate of:

  • 50% for OC (General)
  • 45% for BC/BCM
  • 40% for MBC/DNC
  • Pass marks only for SC/SCA/ST

Meeting the minimum gets you a rank — a high normalised score (closer to 200) is what gives you access to sought-after colleges and branches during counselling.

TNEA 2026 Seats and Colleges Covered

TNEA 2026 covers 455+ engineering colleges affiliated with Anna University in Tamil Nadu. In the 2025 cycle, approximately 1,72,388 seats were available across government, government-aided, and self-financing colleges for B.E., B.Tech, B.Arch, and B.Planning.

The exact 2026 seat count will be confirmed before counselling begins.

TNEA 2026 Community Categories and Seat Reservation

Government-quota seats (65% of total college seats) are reserved as:

CategoryReservation Percentage
OC (Open Competition)31%
BC26.5%
MBC/DNC20%
SC15%
SCA3%
BCM3.5%
ST1%

An additional 7.5% Government School Quota is carved from within each category's existing share for students from Tamil Nadu government schools.

TNEA 2026 Round 1 Counselling Schedule

Round 1 choice filling starts July 20, 2026 and closes July 22, 2026, for candidates ranked 1 to 37,976. Tentative seat allotment is expected July 24, 2026.

Special category and Government School Quota counselling runs July 13–18 before the main rounds. All dates are subject to AICTE approval — check tneaonline.org for confirmation.

TNEA and Improvement Exam Marks

No. TNEA uses only first-attempt Class 12 board marks. Marks from improvement exams, supplementary exams, or re-attempts are not counted in the rank calculation — regardless of which board you studied under.

TNEA Admission for Out-of-State Candidates

Yes, but only through the OC (Open Competition) category. Students from outside Tamil Nadu are not eligible for the state's community reservations — BC, MBC, SC, and ST quotas apply only to Tamil Nadu residents with valid community and nativity certificates.

Non-Tamil Nadu candidates compete for the 31% OC seats across participating colleges.

TNEA 2026 College and Branch-Wise Cutoff Marks

Official closing marks by college and branch are published on the TNEA cutoff portal at cutoff.tneaonline.org. The 2026 data will appear after the Round 1 tentative allotment (expected July 24, 2026) and will be updated after each subsequent counselling round.

*The article might have information for the previous academic years, which will be updated soon subject to the notification issued by the University/College.

TNEA 2026 Rank List Release Date

The TNEA 2026 rank list was released on July 1, 2026 at tneaonline.org. It was originally planned for June 29 but was pushed to July 1 to accommodate CBSE candidates whose board revaluation marks arrived late.

Check your rank through your candidate login or download the category-wise PDF on the same portal.

Is TNEA a Written Entrance Exam?

No. TNEA does not hold any written test. Your rank is calculated entirely from your Class 12 marks in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.

The formula used is: Maths + (Physics ÷ 2) + (Chemistry ÷ 2), out of 200. Anna University normalises those marks across all boards before generating the final rank list.

Maximum Mark and Top Scorers

The maximum TNEA score is 200. This is achieved by scoring 100 in Maths (counts fully) and 100 each in Physics and Chemistry (each counted as 50).

In TNEA 2025, 141 candidates scored a perfect 200. Competition at the very top of the rank list is extremely tight; even one mark's difference can separate hundreds of candidates.

How to Check Your TNEA 2026 Rank

You need the email ID you used during TNEA 2026 registration and your account password. If you forgot the password, use the Forgot Password option on the login page to reset it via your registered mobile number or email.

Name Missing from Rank List

First, check whether your registration was fully completed — fee paid, documents uploaded, and certificate verification done at a Facilitation Centre. The Grievance Redressal window (June 30 – July 4, 2026) has now closed.

If your name is genuinely missing, contact the TNEA helpdesk at tneaonline.org immediately with your application number and proof of registration.

TNEA 2026 Rank Calculation Formula

Your TNEA score = Mathematics marks (full) + Physics marks (÷2) + Chemistry marks (÷2), for a maximum of 200. Mathematics carries 50% of the weightage; Physics and Chemistry together carry the other 50%.

Anna University normalises these marks across all boards — TN State Board, CBSE, ICSE, and others — before computing your final score and rank.

TNEA 2026 Tie-Breaking Rule

Ties are broken in this order:

  1. Higher Mathematics percentage
  2. Higher Physics percentage
  3. Higher optional/elective subject percentage
  4. Higher overall Class 12 percentage
  5. Older date of birth
  6. Higher TNEA random number assigned by DOTE

Only if all six criteria are equal does a tie remain — virtually impossible in practice.

What is the TNEA Random Number?

The TNEA random number is a 10-digit number assigned by DOTE to every registered candidate as the last-resort tiebreaker. It was released on June 10, 2026 and appears on your rank card.

It only affects rank if you and another candidate have identical normalised scores, identical individual subject marks, identical overall HSC percentage, and the same date of birth. For most candidates, rank is decided long before the random number matters.

Does a Higher Random Number Guarantee a Better Rank?

Only if you are tied with another student on all five earlier criteria — Maths percentage, Physics percentage, optional subject marks, overall Class 12 percentage, and date of birth. For the vast majority of candidates, rank is determined well before the random number comes into play.

Think of it as a last resort, not a primary driver of your position in the list.

Minimum Percentage Required for a Rank

You need a minimum PCM aggregate of:

  • 50% for OC (General)
  • 45% for BC/BCM
  • 40% for MBC/DNC
  • Pass marks only for SC/SCA/ST

Meeting the minimum gets you a rank. A high normalised score (closer to 200) is what gives you access to sought-after colleges and branches during counselling.

Seats and Colleges Covered

TNEA 2026 covers 455+ engineering colleges affiliated with Anna University in Tamil Nadu. In the 2025 cycle, approximately 1,72,388 seats were available across government, government-aided, and self-financing colleges.

Can I Change Choices After Locking in Round 1?

No. Once you lock and submit choices for a round, they cannot be changed within that round. You can revise choices when Round 2 opens — but only if you selected the upgrade option at the Round 1 allotment stage.

If you accepted Round 1 as final, you do not participate in further rounds.

What Happens if I Do Not Accept My Round 1 Seat?

You have two options: upgrade or withdraw. Choosing upgrade holds your Round 1 seat while you try for something better in Round 2 — the safer route.

Choosing to withdraw entirely releases your Round 1 seat back to the pool, and you must compete fresh in Round 2 with no guarantee of getting any seat. Upgrading is almost always the wiser choice unless you plan to exit the process.
