The process runs online. Candidates register on the state technical education admission portal, enter their qualifying examination marks, choose institutions and branches in order of preference, and are placed in a state merit list. Seats are then allotted over successive rounds, with document verification and reporting at the allotted polytechnic, and any vacant seats filled in later or institute-level rounds. Government polytechnics, government-aided institutions and participating private polytechnics across the state are covered. Reservation for state categories, women candidates and other notified groups is applied as prescribed in the state rules. Because merit is drawn from class 10 marks rather than a test, there is no syllabus, admit card or question paper to prepare for in the years when this route is used. The mode, schedule, seat matrix and fee structure are published each year in the official admission notification.

Candidates must have passed the class 10 examination, or an equivalent qualification, from a recognised board, with the subject requirements and minimum marks stated in the official admission notification. Candidates awaiting their class 10 result are usually allowed to apply provisionally and must produce the result before a seat is confirmed. Domicile or bona fide residence in Rajasthan is required for state quota seats and must be supported by the prescribed certificate. Lateral entry into the second year requires the technical qualification specified for that route. Reservation, category relaxation and any age condition follow the rules published by the state department of technical education.
