The paper is objective and multiple choice and is based on the class 11 and class 12 syllabus in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, with sections on English and aptitude included in some years, so preparation follows the standard higher secondary science course. It is normally delivered as a computer based or remotely proctored test, often across a window of dates from which the candidate books a slot. The number of questions, the duration, the subject wise distribution and the marking scheme including any negative marking are stated in the admission bulletin released for each cycle. After the result, the institute publishes a rank list and conducts counselling in which candidates verify documents, choose branches and confirm seats, with merit scholarships offered to high ranking candidates on the terms the institute announces. Branch availability, fee structure and scholarship conditions should be taken from the official admission bulletin.

Candidates must have passed class 12 or an equivalent examination from a recognised board with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as subjects, or with the alternative subject combination the institute accepts for a particular branch such as biology or computer science, and must meet the qualifying marks specified in the official admission bulletin. Students appearing in the class 12 examination in the current year may apply provisionally, subject to producing the result before the deadline. Any age condition expressed as a date of birth cut off, the relaxations available, the accepted equivalent qualifications and the documents required at admission are all stated in the bulletin issued by the institute for that admission year.
