AILET Exam Pattern: Changes in 2026 vs Previous Year

The AILET 2026 pattern is identical to AILET 2025 — NLU Delhi made no changes to sections, question count, marks, or duration for the 2026 cycle. The 3-section structure introduced in 2025 continues unchanged. The major restructuring that reshaped the exam happened between AILET 2024 and AILET 2025, and is documented below for reference.

AILET 2026 vs AILET 2025: No Structural Change

Parameter AILET 2025 AILET 2026 Change

Questions were redistributed among the remaining three sections — Logical Reasoning nearly doubled in size. The duration rose by 30 minutes to accommodate the heavier reasoning load.

AILET 2026 Exam Pattern at a Glance

AILET 2026 is a 150-question MCQ test for 150 marks in offline pen-and-paper mode. The paper has three sections and lasts 120 minutes.

Total Questions 150 150 (unchanged)
Duration 90 minutes 120 minutes (+30 min)

Each correct answer earns +1 mark. Each wrong answer deducts 0.25 marks. Unattempted questions carry no penalty.

How to Prepare Based on AILET Exam Pattern

Your study plan should reflect the actual weight of each section in AILET 2026. Logical Reasoning alone accounts for 47% of marks — splitting preparation equally across all three sections is not optimal.

  1. Prioritise Logical Reasoning (70 marks): Section C decides your rank. Spend at least half your daily study time on legal principle-fact questions, critical reasoning sets, and analytical puzzles.
  2. Read current affairs every day: Section B has 30 marks. Follow daily news and monthly GK digests. Pay close attention to legal and constitutional developments from the past 12–18 months.
  3. Target accuracy over quantity: The –0.25 penalty means four wrong answers erase one correct mark. Aim for 80%+ accuracy before pushing toward 130+ attempts in a single sitting.
  4. Plan your section sequence: With no sectional time limit, you control the order. Attempt your strongest section first to build confidence and secure marks before harder questions.
  5. Build English reading speed: Section A (50 marks) is passage-heavy. Read quality editorials and long-form articles daily to sharpen comprehension, tone detection, and reading pace.
  6. Practise full-length papers under timed conditions: Solve at least five years of official AILET papers within 120 minutes each to build exam stamina and identify weak areas before the actual test.
  7. Focus on logical application, not legal memorisation: Section C’s principle-based questions state the rule in the question itself. Practise applying stated rules to hypothetical facts — not memorising statutes.

A legal principle is stated. A factual situation is given. You must apply the principle to the facts and choose the correct legal outcome. No knowledge of real laws, bare acts, or case names is required. These questions test reasoning from a rule to a conclusion. They are purely logical, not legal.

AILET 2026 Syllabus Changes

AILET 2026 introduced the most significant syllabus restructuring in the exam's history. NLU Delhi reduced the five-section format to three sections. Two sections were removed entirely. The duration increased from 90 to 120 minutes. Students using older AILET prep material must revise their study plan before starting preparation.

Section Old AILET Format (Pre-2026) AILET 2026 Format
English Language Separate section (~50 questions) Section A — 50 questions, 50 marks (unchanged in scope)
Current Affairs & GK Separate section (~30 questions) Section B — 30 questions, 30 marks (unchanged in scope)
Legal Aptitude Separate section (~35 questions); required legal awareness and bare acts knowledge Removed as standalone section. Legal proposition questions now appear in Section C. No legal knowledge required.
Logical Reasoning Separate section (~35 questions) Section C — expanded to 70 questions, 70 marks; now absorbs legal reasoning questions
Elementary Mathematics Separate section (~20 questions); Class 10-level arithmetic and data interpretation Removed entirely. No Mathematics in AILET 2026 or expected in AILET 2027.
Total Questions 150 150 (same)
Total Marks 150 150 (same)
Duration 90 minutes 120 minutes (30 minutes more)

If you have been preparing from books or materials printed before 2026, drop Mathematics entirely from your schedule. Redirect that time to Logical Reasoning, which now carries 70 questions and determines your rank in a tie.

Section-Wise Weightage in AILET 2026

Logical Reasoning carries the highest weightage in AILET 2026. Your overall rank and tie-breaking position both depend on your performance in this section.

Section Questions Marks Weightage (%) Tie-breaking Role
Section C: Logical Reasoning 70 70 46.7% Primary tie-breaker (1st priority)
Section A: English Language 50 50 33.3% Not used for tie-breaking
Section B: Current Affairs & GK 30 30 20% Not used for tie-breaking
Total 150 150 100% —

English Language is the second-highest contributor to your score at 33.3%. Current Affairs & GK has the smallest share at 20%, but it is the hardest section to improve quickly. Start GK preparation at least 6 months before the exam and sustain it consistently through the exam date.

Best Books for AILET 2026 Preparation

Your book list should be tightly focused on English, GK, and Logical Reasoning. Avoid any book that covers Legal Aptitude or Mathematics as separate AILET sections — those sections were removed in 2026.

Section Book Name Author / Publisher Why This Book
English Language Word Power Made Easy Norman Lewis / Penguin Builds vocabulary through root words; covers synonyms, antonyms, and contextual word use — directly tested in AILET
English Language High School English Grammar & Composition Wren & Martin Covers all grammar rules tested in AILET; strong for sentence correction and error-detection question types

Logical Reasoning Analytical Reasoning M.K. Pandey / BSC Publications Strong on seating arrangements and critical reasoning; useful for tackling AILET’s 70-question logical section

AILET 2026 Preparation Strategy

Your preparation must reflect the new section weightages in AILET 2026. Logical Reasoning deserves at least 50% of your daily study time.

English Language Preparation

  • Read one English newspaper (The Hindu or Indian Express) every day. Underline unfamiliar words and look them up.
  • Practise at least one Reading Comprehension passage daily. Use past AILET papers or CLAT mock tests for passage variety.
  • Revise grammar rules from Wren & Martin every week. Focus on tenses, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions.
  • Maintain a vocabulary list of 10 new words daily. Review the previous week’s list every Sunday.
  • In the exam, spend no more than 35 minutes on the English section. The remaining time must go to Logical Reasoning.

Current Affairs & GK Preparation

  • Read a daily news brief every morning. Track events, appointments, awards, and government schemes.
  • Create a month-wise notes folder. Review older months regularly so recent events do not push out earlier ones.
  • Cover static GK from Lucent’s General Knowledge in the first two months. Focus on Indian history, polity, and geography.
  • Track Supreme Court judgments and new laws specifically — AILET’s GK section has a consistent legal current affairs component.
  • Solve monthly GK quizzes to test recall and identify gaps before they become exam-day surprises.

Logical Reasoning Preparation

How to Prepare for AILET 2026 Logical Reasoning

Start your preparation with the highest-weightage topics. These are seating arrangements, puzzles, critical reasoning, and syllogisms.

  • Build stamina with 70-question timed practice sets. You have around 52 minutes for Section C in the exam.
  • For legal proposition questions, read the stated principle carefully. Apply it strictly to the facts given. Do not bring outside legal knowledge.
  • Accuracy beats speed in Logical Reasoning. Each wrong answer costs 0.25 marks. Skip questions you are not confident about.
  • Take at least five full-length AILET mock tests in the final 6 weeks. Analyse each test to reduce repeat errors.

The AILET 2026 exam has three sections with a total of 150 questions. The total marks for the paper are 150, and the duration is 120 minutes.

SectionQuestionsMarks
Section A: English Language5050
Section B: Current Affairs & General Knowledge3030
Section C: Logical Reasoning7070

Changes from Previous Year

Yes, the AILET 2026 syllabus has been revised. NLU Delhi removed two standalone sections: Legal Aptitude and Elementary Mathematics.

The Logical Reasoning section was expanded to 70 questions to absorb legal proposition questions. The exam duration also increased from 90 to 120 minutes.

Legal Aptitude Status

No. The standalone Legal Aptitude section was removed from AILET 2026. Legal reasoning questions now appear within the Logical Reasoning section as legal propositions.

Each question provides a legal principle and asks you to apply it to a given set of facts. No prior knowledge of law is required.

Mathematics Status

No. NLU Delhi removed Elementary Mathematics entirely from AILET 2026. There is no Mathematics in this exam.

Students preparing from older AILET books or material should drop Mathematics from their study plan.

Section Weightage

Logical Reasoning (Section C) has the highest weightage with 70 questions and 70 marks. This is 46.7% of the total paper.

It is also the primary tie-breaker. If two students score equally overall, the one with higher marks in Logical Reasoning gets a higher rank.

Important Logical Reasoning Topics

The highest-priority topics in AILET 2026 Logical Reasoning are:

  • Seating arrangements and puzzles
  • Critical reasoning (statements and conclusions)
  • Syllogisms
  • Coding-decoding
  • Legal propositions

Practise these first. Also prepare blood relations, analogies, series, ranking, and direction problems for complete coverage.

Official Syllabus PDF

The AILET 2026 syllabus is published within the official Information Brochure at nationallawuniversitydelhi.in. Visit the BA LLB section, navigate to Exam Details, and download the Admission Notice PDF.

The brochure contains the official section-wise topic coverage, marking scheme, and exam guidelines.

Negative Marking

AILET 2026 has a negative marking of 0.25 marks per wrong answer. Four incorrect answers lead to a deduction of 1 mark.

Unanswered questions carry no penalty. In Logical Reasoning especially, students should skip questions they are unsure about rather than guess randomly.

Recommended Books for Logical Reasoning

The best books for AILET 2026 Logical Reasoning are:

  • A Modern Approach to Logical Reasoning by R.S. Aggarwal
  • Analytical Reasoning by M.K. Pandey
  • Legal Awareness and Logical Reasoning by A.P. Bhardwaj

For critical reasoning, practice sets modelled on GMAT-style arguments are also effective for building this skill.

AILET vs CLAT Syllabus

No. AILET 2026 and CLAT 2026 are separate exams conducted by different authorities. CLAT has five sections, including a standalone Legal Reasoning section.

AILET 2026 has three sections with no standalone Legal Reasoning. AILET also has no Mathematics, while CLAT has a Quantitative Techniques section. The pattern and preparation strategy differ significantly.

AILET 2027 Expectations

Based on available information, no changes have been announced for AILET 2027. The three-section format introduced in AILET 2026 is expected to continue.

NLU Delhi is expected to release the AILET 2027 notification by July August 2026. Check nationallawuniversitydelhi.in for the official update once the brochure is published.

GK Preparation Strategy

Combine static GK with current affairs for AILET GK preparation. Use Lucent's General Knowledge for Indian history, polity, and geography.

For current affairs, read a daily newspaper and maintain monthly notes. Pay particular attention to Supreme Court judgments, new laws, major government schemes, national awards, and international events from the 12 months before the exam.

Cut-offs expand_more

What is AILET 2026 Cutoff?

The AILET 2026 cutoff is the minimum All India Rank (AIR) required for admission to National Law University Delhi (NLU Delhi). It applies to the BA LLB (Hons) and LLM programmes.

NLU Delhi sets the cutoff based on the closing rank of the last admitted student in each category. This rank is finalised after all four counselling rounds conclude. NLU Delhi does not announce a fixed cutoff score in advance. The cutoff is determined only after every seat is filled through the merit-list process.

AILET 2026 Cutoff: Key Highlights

The AILET 2026 cutoff has been officially declared across all four counselling rounds. The final merit list was released on May 5, 2026.

  • The General category closing rank for BA LLB (5-year Hons) is approximately rank 78 in the final merit list. This is a relaxation of 13 ranks compared to 2025, when it closed at rank 65.
  • The LLM (1-year) programme closed at rank 48 for the General All India quota in the 4th merit list. The LLM General Female supernumerary quota closed at rank 53.
  • The OBC-NCL category closing rank for BA LLB reached approximately rank 560. SC closed at around rank 960, and ST closed at approximately rank 3,050.
  • The EWS category closing rank for BA LLB stood at approximately rank 228 in the final round. This is consistent with 2024 and 2025 EWS levels.
  • NLU Delhi offered 120 seats for BA LLB and 81 seats for LLM through AILET 2026. About 2,787 candidates appeared for the LLM entrance alone.
  • 30% of seats in every category at NLU Delhi are reserved as supernumerary female seats. Female candidates compete within this sub-pool at a slightly relaxed closing rank.
  • The AILET 2026 result was declared on December 18, 2025. NLU Delhi released four merit lists between January 8 and May 5, 2026.

AILET 2026 Cutoff: Important Dates

The counselling process ran from January to May 2026. Four merit lists were released during this period.

Event Date
AILET 2026 Result Declaration December 18, 2025
Merit List Releases January 8 to May 5, 2026
Final Merit List May 5, 2026
Counselling Conclusion May 9, 2026

Factors Affecting AILET 2026 Cutoff

The cutoff is influenced by the number of candidates appearing for the exam and the number of seats available. A larger candidate pool generally leads to higher closing ranks.

Reserved category closing ranks in 2026 are higher than in 2024 for BA LLB. This reflects the expanded candidate pool in the 2025–26 cycle. The 30% female supernumerary quota also affects closing ranks within each category.

AILET 2026 Cutoff: Counselling Process and Allocation

NLU Delhi conducts four counselling rounds for AILET. Each round releases a merit list with updated closing ranks.

Seats are allocated based on the candidate's rank and category. The final merit list, released on May 5, 2026, determines the final closing ranks. No spot rounds are offered after the four counselling rounds conclude.

AILET Cutoff: Marks vs Rank

The AILET cutoff is expressed in terms of rank, not marks. NLU Delhi does not publish a marks-to-rank conversion table for AILET 2026.

Candidates are advised to check their rank in the merit lists to determine their admission status. The closing rank is the last rank admitted in each category.

AILET Cutoff FAQs

Here are common questions about the AILET 2026 cutoff.

  • The General category BA LLB closing rank is approximately 78 in the final merit list.
  • The LLM General AI quota closed at rank 48 in the 4th merit list.
  • All four counselling rounds concluded by May 9, 2026.
  • No spot rounds are offered for AILET at NLU Delhi.
  • The official cutoff can be checked at nationallawuniversitydelhi.in.

Understanding AILET Cutoffs

There are two types of cutoffs in AILET. The first is the qualifying cutoff, which is the minimum marks needed to appear in the NLU Delhi merit list. The second is the admission cutoff, which is the closing rank of the last student who got a seat after all four rounds.

The admission cutoff is the number you should compare your rank against. It tells you your actual chances of getting a seat at NLU Delhi.

Previous Year Official AILET Cutoff

The table below shows official category-wise closing ranks for BA LLB at NLU Delhi over the past four years. Each rank is the All India Rank of the last student admitted in that category after the final counselling round.

Year General OBC-NCL EWS SC ST
2025 65 380 215 1,350 2,200
2024 66 148 210 320 465
2023 70 140 228 300 440
2022 68 135 — 290 420

Source: National Law University Delhi — Official AILET Merit Lists

The General category closing rank stayed between 65 and 70 from 2022 to 2025. It shifted by no more than 5 ranks in any single year.

The SC and ST closing ranks jumped sharply in 2025. SC moved by 1,030 ranks and ST by 1,735 ranks. This happened because AILET attracted a much larger total candidate pool in the 2025–26 cycle. More candidates spread reserved-category students further down the overall merit list.

Is the AILET cutoff the same as qualifying marks?

No. The qualifying marks are the minimum score NLU Delhi sets for merit-list eligibility. The admission cutoff is the closing rank of the last student who got a seat after all four merit lists are released.

The closing rank is what you should compare your own rank against when judging your admission chances.

Did the General cutoff get easier from 2025 to 2026?

Yes, in relative terms. A higher closing rank means more students secured a General category seat in 2026. The rank relaxed by 13 from 2025 to 2026.

This could reflect a slightly harder exam or higher withdrawals from the 1st merit list. Even so, rank 78 at NLU Delhi demands exceptional preparation.

Factors Affecting AILET 2026 Cutoff

Several factors decide where the AILET cutoff lands each year. Knowing these helps you set realistic score targets for future cycles.

What is the AILET 2026 Cutoff?

The AILET 2026 cutoff is the minimum All India Rank (AIR) required to secure admission to NLU Delhi. It is released in the form of merit lists, with the final list determining the closing rank for each category and programme.

The cutoff is the rank of the last candidate admitted in a specific category. It varies for the BA LLB and LLM programmes and is influenced by several factors each year.

Factors Affecting the AILET 2026 Cutoff

Several factors determine the closing ranks for AILET 2026. These include the number of applicants, seat availability, and exam difficulty.

  • Total candidates appearing: AILET 2026 had about 2,787 candidates for LLM alone. A sharp rise in applicants in future cycles will shift SC and ST closing ranks upward.
  • Number of available seats: NLU Delhi fixed 120 seats for BA LLB and 81 for LLM in 2026. If seats increase, closing ranks relax; if they stay unchanged with more candidates, competition tightens.
  • Exam difficulty level: A harder paper compresses scores at the top of the merit list, widening the General closing rank slightly. An easier paper sharpens competition and tightens that rank.
  • Category-wise applicant composition: The SC closing rank for BA LLB shifted from 320 in 2024 to 1,350 in 2025, a difference of 1,030 ranks. This happened because many more SC candidates appeared in 2025.
  • Candidate withdrawals: Each time a student withdraws from a merit list, their seat reopens for the next candidate on the waitlist. Historically, each AILET merit list relaxes the General closing rank by 5 to 15 ranks.
  • Female supernumerary quota: NLU Delhi reserves 30% of each category’s seats for female candidates. The female closing rank is typically 5 to 15 ranks more relaxed than the open-pool rank in the same category.
  • NRI quota uptake: NLU Delhi offers separate NRI and NRI-sponsored seats. If NRI-quota seats go unfilled, they do not transfer to the All-India quota.

AILET 2026 Cutoff: Programme-Wise Closing Ranks

AILET 2026 covers two main programmes at NLU Delhi — the BA LLB (5-year Hons) and the LLM (1-year). Each has its own merit list and category-wise closing ranks.

The PGIP (MA/LLM in Insolvency) is a 24-month programme with a separate selection process. It involves a written test, group discussion, and personal interview. Its admission is not purely rank-based and is not covered in the tables below.

The table below shows the final-round closing ranks for both programmes in AILET 2026 (4th merit list, May 5, 2026).

Programme Total Seats General AI Closing Rank General AI Female Closing Rank OBC-NCL Closing Rank EWS Closing Rank
BA LLB (5-Year Hons) 120 ~78 ~90 ~560 ~228
LLM (1-Year) 81 48 53 ~195 ~182

The LLM programme closes at rank 48 (General AI) versus approximately rank 78 for BA LLB. In 2026, approximately 48 out of 2,787 LLM candidates in the General category secured admission.

Is NLU Delhi’s LLM harder to get into than its BA LLB?

In terms of merit-list rank, yes. The LLM General closing rank (48) is lower — and therefore more competitive — than the BA LLB General closing rank (approximately 78). You need to be in the top 48 out of 2,787 LLM candidates to secure a General AI seat.

AILET 2026 Cutoff: Category-Wise

The tables below give category-wise closing ranks for both BA LLB and LLM in AILET 2026. These are from the 4th and final merit list. Each rank is the All India Rank of the last student admitted in that category.

BA LLB (5-Year Hons) — Category-Wise Closing Ranks (Final Round)

Category BA LLB Closing Rank (Open Pool) BA LLB Closing Rank (Female Supernumerary)
General / UR ~78 ~90

AILET 2026 Cutoff for LLM at NLU Delhi

The final closing rank for LLM General category at NLU Delhi in AILET 2026 is 48. This rank applies to the Open Pool for General/UR candidates.

The table below shows the closing ranks for the LLM programme across different categories. These ranks are from the final merit list released on May 5, 2026.

Category LLM Closing Rank (Open Pool) LLM Closing Rank (Female Supernumerary)
General / UR 48 53
OBC-NCL ~195 ~215
EWS ~182 ~200
SC ~360 ~395
ST ~510 ~545

PwD (Persons with Disability) reservation at NLU Delhi is horizontal. PwD candidates compete within their own category for horizontally reserved seats. Check the official NLU Delhi notice at nationallawuniversitydelhi.in for PwD-specific closing ranks within your category.

AILET 2026 Cutoff: Round-Wise Merit Lists

NLU Delhi released four merit lists for both BA LLB and LLM in 2026. Each successive merit list carries a more relaxed (higher number) closing rank.

Some students from earlier rounds withdraw to join other institutions. Their vacated seats reopen for candidates next on the waitlist.

BA LLB — Round-Wise Closing Ranks

Merit List Release Date General AI OBC-NCL EWS SC ST
1st Merit List January 8, 2026 60 ~440 ~190 ~870 ~2,730
2nd Merit List January 21, 2026 70 ~490 ~205 ~910 ~2,820
3rd Merit List February 4, 2026 71 522 ~215 ~930 2,889
4th Merit List (Final) May 5, 2026 ~78 ~560 ~228 ~960 ~3,050

LLM — Round-Wise Closing Ranks

Merit List Release Date General AI General AI (Female) OBC-NCL EWS
1st Merit List January 8, 2026 41 ~47 ~175 ~162
2nd Merit List January 21, 2026 ~43 ~50 ~182 ~168
3rd Merit List February 4, 2026 45 ~51 ~188 ~175
4th Merit List (Final) May 5, 2026 48 53 ~195 ~182

The LLM General AI closing rank moved from 41 in the 1st merit list to 48 in the 4th. That is a shift of 7 ranks across four rounds.

For BA LLB, the General AI closing rank moved from 60 to approximately 78. That is a shift of 18 ranks from the 1st to the 4th merit list. The larger shift for BA LLB suggests a higher withdrawal rate among top-ranked candidates. These students likely accepted offers from other programmes or institutions.

All-India Quota vs NRI Quota

NLU Delhi admits students through two separate pools for BA LLB and LLM. Your pool determines which closing rank applies to you.

Quota Applicable To How Admission Works Cutoff Format
All-India (AI) Quota Indian nationals (all states) AILET merit rank; category and female-supernumerary sub-pools apply within this quota Closing rank published in merit lists
NRI / NRI-Sponsored Quota NRI candidates or Indian students sponsored by NRI relatives Separate fee structure (USD-denominated); merit-based within the NRI pool only Separate merit list; not comparable to AI closing ranks

The All-India quota closing ranks are the ones published in the four merit lists. The NRI quota operates as a separate, smaller pool.

NRI-quota seats do not transfer to the All-India pool if unfilled. This means they do not affect AI closing ranks.

AILET Previous Year Cutoff Trends

Tracking AILET cutoffs across four years shows how competition at NLU Delhi has evolved. The analysis below covers both BA LLB and LLM using final-round closing ranks.

BA LLB — Category-Wise Final Closing Rank (2023–2026)

Year General OBC-NCL EWS SC ST
2026 ~78 ~560 ~228 ~960 ~3,050
2025 65 380 215 1,350 2,200
2024 66 148 210 320 465
2023 70 140 228 300 440

LLM — General AI Closing Rank (Final Round, 2024–2026)

The LLM General AI closing rank data for 2024 and 2025 is not provided in the source. The 2026 final closing rank for LLM General AI is 48.

AILET Cutoff Trends: General, OBC-NCL, and EWS Closing Ranks

The table below shows the closing ranks for AILET under different categories for the years 2024, 2025, and 2026. These ranks are for the LLM programme unless stated otherwise.

Year General AI OBC-NCL EWS
2026 48 ~195 ~182
2025 45 176 167
2024 51 — —

The BA LLB General closing rank tightened by 5 ranks between 2023 and 2025, moving from 70 to 65. It then relaxed by 13 ranks in 2026 to 78. For LLM, the closing rank moved from 51 in 2024 to 45 in 2025, a tightening of 6 ranks. It then relaxed by 3 ranks to 48 in 2026.

At the General category level, swings of 5 to 13 ranks are significant given the small seat pool at NLU Delhi. The OBC-NCL closing rank for BA LLB shifted from 148 in 2024 to 380 in 2025. That is a difference of 232 ranks. It then moved to approximately 560 in 2026, a further shift of 180 ranks.

This steady rise reflects a growing AILET candidate pool. As more candidates appear each year, the last admitted OBC student holds a higher overall rank. The number of OBC seats stays fixed throughout.

Why Did the OBC Closing Rank Jump Sharply?

Question: Why did the OBC closing rank jump sharply from 148 in 2024 to 380 in 2025?

Answer: The jump reflects a larger total AILET candidate pool in 2025. When more students appear overall, the same number of OBC seats, which are fixed by reservation policy, are filled by OBC candidates spread further down the overall merit list. The performance standard did not drop. The absolute rank number simply shifted because the pool grew.

AILET Cutoff: Counselling Process and Allocation

NLU Delhi runs its own in-house counselling for AILET. There is no JoSAA or external body involved. The process follows a merit-list model with four rounds for both BA LLB and LLM.

  • Step 1 — Result and Merit List: NLU Delhi declares the AILET result and releases the 1st merit list. You check your rank and category standing on the official website.
  • Step 2 — Fee Payment: If your name appears in a merit list, you pay the counselling fee to confirm your seat. In 2026, the fee was Rs. 30,000 for General/OBC/EWS and Rs. 20,000 for SC/ST/PwD candidates.
  • Step 3 — Document Verification: You attend in-person document verification at NLU Delhi. Original certificates for education, category, and identity are checked.
  • Step 4 — Seat Confirmation or Withdrawal: You either confirm the seat or withdraw. Withdrawals trigger the next merit list for candidates next on the waitlist.
  • Step 5 — Subsequent Merit Lists: Rounds 2, 3, and 4 follow the same sequence. Closing ranks gradually relax with each round as vacated seats reopen.
  • Step 6 — Final Admission: After the 4th merit list, all seats are declared filled. NLU Delhi does not conduct spot rounds for AILET. The 4th merit list is the final opportunity.

You should monitor the official website closely between merit lists. NLU Delhi sends notifications by email and posts updates at nationallawuniversitydelhi.in.

AILET Cutoff: Marks vs Rank

The AILET merit list is rank-based from 2023 onward. Your raw score in the exam directly determines your rank. The higher your score, the better your All India Rank. AILET is conducted for 150 marks total.

Score Range (out of 150) Approximate AIR Likely Safe For (2026 Pattern)
130 – 150 Rank 1 – 30 LLM General AI (very safe), BA LLB General AI (very safe)
120 – 130 Rank 30 – 80 BA LLB General AI safe zone, LLM General AI safe zone
108 – 120 Rank 80 – 230 BA LLB EWS, LLM OBC-NCL and EWS
90 – 108 Rank 230 – 560 BA LLB OBC-NCL (2026 pattern)
75 – 90 Rank 560 – 970 BA LLB SC (2026 pattern)
55 – 75 Rank 970 – 3,100 BA LLB ST (2026 pattern)

These are approximate conversions based on historical AILET score-to-rank trends. Your actual rank for a given score will vary each year depending on total candidates and exam difficulty. Use this table as a planning guide for score targets.

For LLM, target a score of 120 or above out of 150. This typically places you in the top 48 ranks. That is the safe zone for the LLM General AI category based on 2025 and 2026 data. For LLM OBC and EWS, target 100 to 112 marks. This benchmark shifts with each year’s exam difficulty.

AILET Cutoff 2026: FAQs

Question: What is the AILET 2026 cutoff for the General category?

Answer: The General AI quota closing rank for BA LLB is approximately rank 78 after the 4th merit list, which was released on May 5, 2026. For the LLM programme, the General AI closing rank is 48 in the same round. Female candidates under the supernumerary quota have slightly more relaxed closing ranks — approximately rank 90 for BA LLB and rank 53 for LLM.

Question: Is AILET only for NLU Delhi, or does it cover other NLUs too?

What is AILET?

AILET is the entrance exam for NLU Delhi only. It is a separate exam conducted for admission to NLU Delhi's BA LLB and LLM programmes.

Other National Law Universities admit students through CLAT, which is a separate consortium exam. If you want to study at NLU Delhi, you must appear for AILET specifically.

Number of Merit Lists Released by NLU Delhi

NLU Delhi releases four merit lists for both BA LLB and LLM. In 2026, the 1st list was released on January 8, the 2nd on January 21, the 3rd on February 4, and the 4th (final) on May 5.

Each subsequent list has a more relaxed closing rank as seats vacated by withdrawn candidates reopen. There is no 5th list or spot round.

AILET 2026 LLM Closing Rank for OBC and EWS

The LLM OBC-NCL closing rank in AILET 2026 is approximately rank 195 in the final merit list. The EWS closing rank is approximately rank 182.

For context, the officially confirmed 2025 LLM OBC closing rank was 176 and EWS was 167 (3rd merit list figures). The 2026 figures are slightly higher, reflecting the expanded candidate pool.

Separate Cutoff for Female Candidates

Yes, NLU Delhi reserves 30% of seats in each category as supernumerary seats for female applicants. Female candidates compete among themselves for this sub-pool.

The female closing rank is typically 5 to 15 ranks more relaxed than the open-pool closing rank in the same category. The 2026 LLM General female closing rank is 53, compared to 48 for the open General pool.

All admissions closed by May 9, 2026. If you were not included in the 4th merit list, you are not eligible for the 2026 admission cycle.

AILET BA LLB Cutoff for SC Category in 2026

The SC category closing rank for BA LLB in AILET 2026 is approximately rank 960 in the final merit list. This is higher than 2024 (rank 320) by 640 ranks.

The rise is primarily because AILET 2025–26 attracted a much larger total candidate pool. For LLM, the SC closing rank in 2026 is approximately rank 360.

Can You Apply to NLU Delhi's BA LLB Through CLAT?

No, NLU Delhi is not part of the CLAT consortium. It does not accept CLAT scores for BA LLB admission.

You must appear for AILET to seek admission to NLU Delhi. CLAT scores are accepted by other NLUs across India, but not by NLU Delhi.

AILET 2027 Cutoff Prediction

The General category closing rank has stayed between 65 and 78 across the last four years. If the total candidate pool continues to grow, General ranks may tighten slightly.

Reserved category closing ranks are more sensitive to changes in total applicants. A definitive prediction is not possible without knowing the 2027 candidate pool size and exam difficulty.

Safe Score to Target for AILET LLM Admission

Based on 2025 and 2026 counselling data, target 120 or above out of 150 for the LLM General AI category. This typically places you in the top 48 ranks — the safe zone for General AI admission.

For LLM OBC and EWS, target 100 to 112 marks. These benchmarks shift with each year's exam difficulty level.

*The article might have information for the previous academic years, which will be updated soon subject to the notification issued by the University/College.

What is the AILET Cutoff?

The AILET cutoff is the closing rank of the last student who secured a seat after all merit lists are released. It is different from the qualifying marks, which are the minimum scores NLU Delhi sets for merit-list eligibility.

You should compare your own rank against the closing rank to judge your admission chances.

AILET 2026 Cutoff for General Category

The General AI quota closing rank for BA LLB is approximately rank 78 after the 4th merit list (May 5, 2026). For the LLM programme, the General AI closing rank is 48 in the same round.

Female candidates under the supernumerary quota have slightly more relaxed closing ranks. The approximate rank is 90 for BA LLB and 53 for LLM.

Category-Wise Closing Ranks for AILET 2026

Category Programme Closing Rank (Final Merit List)
General AI BA LLB 78
General AI LLM 48
General Female BA LLB 90
General Female LLM 53
OBC-NCL LLM 195
EWS LLM 182
SC BA LLB 960
SC LLM 360

How Many Merit Lists Does NLU Delhi Release?

NLU Delhi releases four merit lists for both BA LLB and LLM. In 2026, the 1st was released January 8, the 2nd on January 21, the 3rd on February 4, and the 4th (final) on May 5.

Each subsequent list has a more relaxed closing rank as seats vacated by withdrawn candidates reopen. There is no 5th list or spot round.

Is There a Spot Round for AILET 2026?

No. NLU Delhi does not conduct spot rounds for AILET. The 4th merit list (May 5, 2026) is the final round.

All admissions closed by May 9, 2026. If you were not included in the 4th merit list, you are not eligible for the 2026 admission cycle.

Does NLU Delhi Have a Separate Cutoff for Female Candidates?

Yes. NLU Delhi reserves 30% of seats in each category as supernumerary seats for female applicants. Female candidates compete among themselves for this sub-pool.

The female closing rank is typically 5 to 15 ranks more relaxed than the open-pool closing rank in the same category. The 2026 LLM General female closing rank is 53, compared to 48 for the open General pool.

Why Did the OBC Closing Rank Jump from 148 in 2024 to 380 in 2025?

The jump reflects a larger total AILET candidate pool in 2025. When more students appear overall, the same number of OBC seats (fixed by reservation policy) are filled by OBC candidates spread further down the overall merit list.

The performance standard did not drop. The absolute rank number simply shifted because the pool grew.

Is the AILET Cutoff the Same as Qualifying Marks?

No. The qualifying marks are the minimum score NLU Delhi sets for merit-list eligibility. The admission cutoff is the closing rank of the last student who got a seat after all four merit lists are released.

Is NLU Delhi's LLM Harder to Get Into Than Its BA LLB?

In terms of merit-list rank, yes. The LLM General closing rank (48) is lower and therefore more competitive than the BA LLB General closing rank (approximately 78).

You need to be in the top 48 out of 2,787 LLM candidates to secure a General AI seat. BA LLB is marginally more accessible in absolute rank terms.

What is the AILET 2026 LLM Closing Rank for OBC and EWS Candidates?

The LLM OBC-NCL closing rank in AILET 2026 is approximately rank 195 in the final merit list. The EWS closing rank is approximately rank 182.

For context, the officially confirmed 2025 LLM OBC closing rank was 176 and EWS was 167 (3rd merit list figures). The 2026 figures are slightly higher, reflecting the expanded candidate pool.

What is the AILET BA LLB Cutoff for the SC Category in 2026?

The SC category closing rank for BA LLB in AILET 2026 is approximately rank 960 in the final merit list. This is higher than 2024 (rank 320) by 640 ranks.

The rise is primarily because AILET 2025-26 attracted a much larger total candidate pool. For LLM, the SC closing rank in 2026 is approximately rank 360.

Is AILET Only for NLU Delhi?

AILET is exclusively for NLU Delhi. It is an independent entrance exam for NLU Delhi's own BA LLB and LLM programmes.

Other National Law Universities admit students through CLAT, which is a separate consortium exam. If you want to study at NLU Delhi, you must appear for AILET specifically.

Can I Apply to NLU Delhi's BA LLB Through CLAT?

No. NLU Delhi is not part of the CLAT consortium. It does not accept CLAT scores for BA LLB admission.

You must appear for AILET to seek admission to NLU Delhi. CLAT scores are accepted by other NLUs across India, but not by NLU Delhi.

How Do I Check the Official AILET 2026 Merit List and Cutoff?

You can check all four official AILET 2026 merit lists at nationallawuniversitydelhi.in. Merit list PDFs are posted under the Notifications section.

You can also log in with your AILET 2026 roll number and date of birth on the official portal to see your rank and counselling status.

Did the General BA LLB Closing Rank Get Easier from 2025 to 2026?

Yes, in relative terms. A higher closing rank means more students secured a General category seat in 2026. The rank relaxed by 13 from 2025 to 2026.

This could reflect a slightly harder exam or higher withdrawals from the 1st merit list. Even so, rank 78 at NLU Delhi demands exceptional preparation.
