About

The Architectural History and Historic Preservation Division (AHHP) internship offers undergraduate students hands-on experience in architectural history and historic preservation research. Under the guidance of the Division’s director, interns analyze primary source materials to address preservation challenges within the Smithsonian’s architectural collections. This 10-week, full-time program provides exposure to professional research methods while contributing to real-world preservation efforts. Participants receive a stipend of $2,000, subject to funding availability, and gain insight into the intersection of history, architecture, and cultural heritage conservation.

Eligibility

Open to undergraduate students who have completed coursework in art history, architectural history, or related fields. No citizenship restrictions apply. Applicants should demonstrate academic interest in preservation studies. Prior research experience is beneficial but not mandatory. The program does not impose income or grade thresholds; selection is based on relevance of coursework and alignment with AHHP’s research priorities.

How to apply

Apply through the official page listed for the AHHP internship. Prepare a resume, a statement of interest (1–2 pages) outlining your academic background and preservation-related goals, and two academic or professional references. Submit all materials before the deadline specified on the official page. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. Shortlisted candidates may be contacted for an interview.
