The Science & Engineering Research Board – Extra Mural Research Funding (SERB-EMR) supports individual researchers in India to carry out original research projects across science and engineering fields. The scheme funds competitive proposals year-round, covering disciplines such as Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, and Mathematical Sciences.

Applicants must hold a regular academic or research position in an Indian institution. Principal investigators typically need a PhD or equivalent experience. There are no fixed marks or income thresholds; selection is based on scientific merit and feasibility. The scheme is open to all categories including SC, ST, OBC, EWS, PwD, and general candidates. Joint proposals are also accepted.
